Leipzig Tourist Service e.V. and the city marketing agency Marketing Leipzig GmbH have recently joined forces under marketing specialist and new managing director Volker Bremer. Bremer is the successor of Richard Schrumpf, who retired on 1 July 2006. With the integration of Marketing Leipzig GmbH into LTS, tourism, city marketing and regional economic marketing goals can be pursued under a common flag. Volker Bremer, 44, is married and has two daughters. He previously lived in Verden an der Aller where he worked as a freelance management consultant. Having studied economics at the University of Hanover, he worked first for a number of international brand-name companies (including Kraft Foods GmbH) before taking the plunge into self-employment in 1998. Volker Bremer has had ties to Leipzig ever since, acting as an interim manager and consultant to various cultural and recreational facilities, with a focus on marketing, PR, organization and personnel. Among his other tasks, he served as a strategy and marketing consultant for the Leipzig Zoo.

Video art and installation have dominated the art world for years. Only recently has representational painting begun to make a comeback. For months now, the world has been talking about Leipzig - at least since the German magazine "ART" published an issue devoted to the city's artists. The term "Leipzig School" can now be found in many languages. The opening of a new museum building for the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts as well as the new building of the Gallery of Contemporary Art, the renovation of the Grassi Museum, and the relocation of prominent galleries to the "Baumwollspinnerei", a former cotton mill turned "art factory", has made Leipzig and its art scene a focal point for tourists. In keeping with the theme of "Art in Leipzig", the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts will be opening its Max Klinger exhibition "One Love. Max Klinger and his Legacy" from 10 March to 24 June 2007, marking the 150th anniversary of the artist's birth. Art lovers can book a special two-day trip at LTS for 99 euros per person (double room).

Shopping opportunities in Leipzig's historical city centre range from exclusive boutiques to major department store chains and retail shops. The compact city centre is easy to navigate, having an area of less than 1 km2. A pleasant mix of shops, museums, cafés and restaurants makes for a lively and colourful atmosphere, ideally suited for shopping and strolling. The website lists a variety of malls, arcades and shopping streets, offers tips for souvenir shopping, and provides information on outdoor markets and market days. Leipzig also offers a variety of programmes for school groups, focusing, for example, on the city's role in recent European history. It was here in 1989 that the "Peaceful Revolution" began which ultimately led to German reunification. Authentic sites of the revolution include St Nicholas Church and the "Round Corner". The latter housed the former regional administration of the East German secret police, the Stasi, and today contains a museum highlighting the methods of the former secret service.Leipzig can be reached easily and affordably, for as little as £19, with an Air Berlin flight from England or Scotland. Museums in the "City of Heroes"
The trade-fair and music city of Leipzig was given a new sobriquet in 1989: the "City of Heroes". The peace prayers at St Nicholas Church set into motion what was to go down in history as the "Peaceful Revolution". The end of the revolution was marked by the fall of the communist regime and the reunification of Germany.
The "Autumn of '89" can be relived at the Museum of Contemporary History. Impressive photo, sound and film archives will take you back to the singular atmosphere of those historic days and weeks. The museum also offers a journey into the history of East Germany, from the end of the war to the present. The permanent exhibition covers topics such as the Uprising of 17 June 1953, the erection of the Berlin Wall in August 1961, and daily life in the GDR.
The methods of the East German secret police, the Stasi, form the focus of the museum at the "Round Corner". The history and operational methods of the infamous state security service are on display here in original rooms of the Stasi's former regional headquarters. Apart from countless documents and photos, the museum's exhibits include bugging and "mail monitoring" devices, disguises used by agents, and a curious collection of "smell samples" taken from individuals under surveillance. The former Stasi remand prison and recruitment unit are also part of the exhibit. The museum is one of few around the world to detail the workings of a secret service. Moreover, it is the only one of its kind in Germany to be housed in original Stasi rooms.

More than just Bach
Event highlights in the music city
Leipzig, the city of music, will once again live up to its international reputation in 2007. The calendar of events is packed for the first half-year alone. The programme contains an array of concert highlights with the famed Gewandhaus Orchestra under the direction of Riccardo Chailly. On 29 and 30 March, Johann Sebastian Bach's "St Matthew Passion" will be performed in the Great Hall of the Gewandhaus. And on 5 and 6 April, the Gewandhaus Orchestra and St Thomas Boys' Choir will perform the St John Passion in Leipzig's St Thomas Church. Of course, the highlight for Bach fans is the International Bach Festival from 7 to 17 June, this year under the motto "From Monteverdi to Bach". The eighth annual A Cappella Festival will be taking place from 4 to 12 May, giving top-class German and international ensembles a chance to put their skills on display, performing vocal music in the most varied forms. For the first time in 2007, young vocal groups will battle it out in a singing competition. All musical genres are permitted - from Renaissance to rock, and Gothic to gospel. In addition to festivals and gala concerts, time-tested "classics" such as Sunday matinees at the Mendelssohn House or motets and cantatas at St Thomas Church performed by the legendary St Thomas Boys' Choir are also part of the programme.
