In Leipzig, visitors can embark on a fascinating journey to ancient Rome. The panorama project "Rome 312" has been visited by nearly 300,000 guests since November 2005 and will be open until the beginning of 2009 in the Panometer Leipzig, a remodeled former gas tank of Leipzig Public Service. The main attraction of the exhibition is the panoramic painting of Rome in the year 312 by the Berlin architect and artist, Yadegar Asisi. It is currently the largest panorama in the world. The perspectively constructed cylindrical image is impressive on account of its full-scale spatial depiction of ancient Rome and the solemn entry of Emperor Constantine with his soldiers on October 29, 312 after the Battle of Milvian Bridge. To an extent, that date marks the last day of ancient Rome. Surrounded by the 106 meter long and 31 meter high panoramic painting, the viewer himself becomes immersed in a panoramic setting and in ancient Rome.
After May 11, 2007, the exhibition will be expanded by a new attraction: In collaboration with Konstantin-Ausstellungsgesellschaft mbH in Trier, the worldwide first reconstruction of the colossal statue of the Roman Emperor Constantine, of which only stone fragments exist, will be presented in full-scale. Yadegar Asisi remarks, "For the reconstruction I chose the medium of spatial simulation. The viewer will have the immediate impression of the statue appearing three-dimensionally and 15 meters high on its base in the middle of the accompanying exhibition of my panorama project 'Rome 312'."
As Constantine, who had ruled the Roman Empire, united east and west, Yadegar Asisi and the Asisi Factory team will also present in Trier, Germany, a second reconstruction of the once 12-meter high colossal statue of Constantine as a spatial simulation. This project is part of the internationally significant exhibition, "Constantine the Great" (June 2 until November 4, 2007).
Yadegar Asisi has long been fascinated by the character of the Roman Emperor: "The statue fragments are in themselves impressive. What effect did the statue have in its entirety on the viewer? What did people feel when viewing the statue?" Asisi worked especially on those aspects in both of his reconstructions. The colossal statue of the Emperor Constantine was one of the largest statues in the ancient world. Constantine had it erected in the Basilica of Maxentius at the Forum Romanum after his victory over the usurper Maxentius in the Battle of Milvian Bridge. Today, the surviving statue fragments - the colossal head, a foot and a hand - are in the courtyard of the Capitoline museums in Rome.
