Vienna (pte030/13.05.2013/14:32) - Observers will be monitoring how many foxes and other predators are killed by trappers in Carinthia during the next year.
That is the conclusion of a recent round table headed by local hunting and animal protection secretary Christian Ragger (FPK, Carinthia Freedom Party).
The animal protection ombudswomen Ingrid Fischinger and Freydis Burgstaller-Gradenegger of the Carinthian hunting association also took part in the meeting which decided to monitor trapping for one year in order to weigh up a possible change in the Carinthian hunting law.
The discussion was brought up by a case in which a pet dog was killed by trappers. The incident was a catalyst for animal protectors in Carinthia who started a petition to ban trapping. The owner of the dog finally had to pay a fine because her dog was wondering unsupervised in the woods.
There have been 20 permits issued in Carinthia to use the traps for hunting. According to animal protection secretary Christian Ragger, the hunting association has been respecting strict, self-imposed rules regarding trapping.
