Vienna (pte014/25.04.2013/11:02) - The 11-year-old five Euro notes will get a new look from May, 2 in an attempt to limit the production of fake notes.
The vice chairman of Austria's national bank Wolfgang Duchatczek explained that the security technology now dates back to at least 15 years and that the five Euro note is just the first one to be largely faked.
Each year, another note is replicated, in order of their value. In the coming years, the ten, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 years will also be falsified, according to Duchatczek.
The old five Euro note will retain its value for the foreseeable future and people will be able to change them for the new notes after a transitional period.
Experts have been working on the new design for years. The watermark and the hologram band on the side of the note show the motives of the mythological Greek goddess Europa.
The green colour will also change to blue when the note is slanted. The material of the note remains the same
The new security measure should make it even more difficult to duplicate the note despite the fact that forgery of bank notes has fallen in the 17 Eurozone countries.
Member of the directorate of the European Central Bank Benoit Coeure also pronounced himself against the abolishment of the 500-Euro note, as recently suggested by some experts. Transparency International for example had criticised the use of the notes because they facilitate money laundering, corruption and tax evasion.
