Vienna (pte020/08.03.2013/15:09) - This year's Salzburg Festival will cost an extra 4.3 million Euros more than originally planned.
The board of trustees has agreed that they need to budget an extra 4.3 million Euros to the initial budget of the Salzburg Festival - although the budget was officially capped at 60 million on two separate occasions.
The festival will be held between July 19 and September 1 and will cost organisers a total of 64.3 million Euros according to the revised budget.
The director general of the festival Alexander Pereira and its president Helga Rabl-Stadler said they were confident they will be able to make up most of that money with sponsoring and extra ticket earnings.
The budget was reviewed and finally increased after organisers realised they would need much more money for the Festival Ball, the maintenance organisation, the VAT and several other small budgetary items which had not been included in the initial budget of 60 million Euros.
Festival president Rabl-Stafler said: "However, there still is a deficit of 2.3 million Euros. We are absolutely optimistic and confident that this deficit will be made up by our own efforts.
"Every year, we have sold about five percent more tickets than anticipated. We're expecting an additional million Euros from the ticket sales. Moreover, Alexander Pereira and I will be searching for extra sponsors - thank God there isn't much missing now from the 1.3 Million Euros we still need."
According to the chairwomen of the board of trustees Andrea Ecker, the two directors have had to force themselves to review the budget in detail to eliminate all "nice to have's". She said: "We realise that the directorate needs flexibility. We trustees are just concerned that the budget is balanced at the end of the event."
She added: "It's absolutely clear that there won't be anymore state subsidies for the 2013 budget."
