Austrias first ecological living complex to be constructed
100 percent ecological living complex to be constructed in Styria

Vienna (pte027/06.03.2013/16:51) - The first 100 percent 'ecological village' to be built in Austria is due to start construction in the autumn of 2013 in Kirchbach in Styria.

Up to 160 'ecological-houses' will be built on 24 hectares of unspoilt land around the Waldegg castle.

These houses will be integrated in an agricultural plan and attract ecological-consumers and prospective ecological-farmers.

Project coordinator Werner Maierhofer wants to follow various construction steps to make sure he creates small villages with central supply units as opposed to one big holiday resort.

He said: "This ecological-village is not going to function solely as a holiday resort. It will be on the one hand a classic holiday resort, but also an ecological residential village and thirdly an accessible residence."

The small wooden houses which can be bought or rented will be constructed in container-style and also be built in a way which is 100 percent ecological, Maierhofer said.

The land also has to be exploited strictly ecologically. The rented land enables people living there to grow their products right in front of their front door and become more ecologically aware.

The building of infrastructure (sport, entertainment and ecological supply area) is also being carefully monitored by the project operator Felix Niegelhell, who says he wants to ensures that strict ecological criteria are met.

He said: "For us, it's crucial that we reach out to those who consider the issue important - ecological farmers and others, who wish to become farmers but also consumers who want to eat biological products."

According to the project leaders, the first houses could appear in three months.

Similar ecological-village projects are also appearing in Norway and Italy.
