Vienna (pte025/25.10.2012/15:30) - A project that helps children mainly from immigrant families who are having difficulties in school to improve with their studies is appealing for more volunteers in particular English native speakers after notching up considerable success with their work. The Wiener Lerntafel http://www.lerntafel.at/ was founded in 2010 and since then has helped 500 children who need to improve their German, English and maths skills.
According to project manager Stefan Unterberger 92% of the children that they have helped do not have German as their mother tongue. Of these 26% are from Turkey, and 22% with an Arabic background although two thirds of them were born in Austria. They currently have around 200 volunteers but are constantly looking for more and in particular are hoping to obtain more English native speakers to help with translations of texts and assisting the children in learning.
The project has been so successful that they have now expanded the facilities that they have available offering around 2,500 lessons a month to children aged between 6 and 14. And the project has been hailed as a success with 80% of the children who turn up with a deficiency in a specific subject subsequently passing the necessary exams in that subject.
The organisation survives with an annual budget of around 160,000 euros which is mostly from private donations to fund the free lessons for the children.
