Berlin/Tokyo (pts010/15.08.2007/13:37) - Two German hobby pilots are on a trip around the world with a single-motor Cessna: 52,000 kilometres, 30 countries and 50 landings in 80 days. Pilot Uwe Thomas Carstensen (60) and his co-pilot Hans Christian Albertsen (59) will land in Nagasaki on August 18, in Hiroshima on August 20 and August 22 in Asahikawa. Their Cessna T260H is decorated with pictures of red roses and inscribed with the name "Marie" - a declaration of love from the pilot to his wife Maria Carstensen.

Pilots as ambassadors of peace in Hiroshima

Hannover is the pilot's hometown and the partner city of Hiroshima. Mayor Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba will receive the two German adventurers in the city hall, where they will be handing over a message from Hannover's lord mayor Stephan Weil. The message expresses the Mayor's appreciation for two and a half decades of successful partnership for peace between Hiroshima and Hannover. Regular meetings in the areas of culture, economy and science characterise the relationship between the two cities.

Refuelling in Asahikawa for the longest leg

The stopover in Asahikawa is particularly important for the pilots to prepare their plane for the longest leg from Petropavlovsk in Russia to Nome in Alaska. Because the special fuel AvGas is not available in Petropavlovsk, the normal tank, the extra ferry tanks and the additional tank in the baggage hold have to be filled in Asahikawa to make the flight over the Bering Strait, which will take about eleven hours, possible.

World trip began mid-March

The pair Carstensen and Albertsen is the 139th crew since 1924 to fly around the globe in a single-motor plane. Their adventure began mid-March in Germany. The route took them to South-East Europe, the Middle East, Pakistan, India and South-East Asia, straight across the Australian continent to Sydney, where the first stage of their round-the-world trip ended after 22,00 kilometres.

On August 1 the rose-painted airplane began its second stage, which is 30,000 kilometres long. From Australia the route will take them via Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, China, Taiwan and Japan to Russia. The hobby pilots will land on the American continent in Alaska and Canada. The route back will take them via Greenland, Iceland and Great Britain to Germany. The end of the unusual journey is planned for September 14 in Hannover.
