Interlaken (pts022/12.01.2012/14:30) - Light artist Gerry Hofstetter is again lighting up the Jungfrau until January 14. He temporarily had to turn off the lighting on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Jungfrau railway because of storm Andrea, which he weathered well on the glacier at an altitude of 3,380 metres.
On the night of January 2, Gerry Hofstetter projected the Swiss cross onto the Jungfrau for the first time on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Jungfrau railway. Hofstetter and his team have set up camp beneath the Jungfrau's summit. While storm Andrea was hitting Switzerland, the group took shelter in a container at an altitude of 3,380 metres. The camp was evacuated on January 7.
Gerry Hofstetter's light architecture was twice to be seen during the week of January 1. The project is being continued because of worldwide interest. Forecasts are predicting good weather. Gerry Hofstetter is therefore confident that he will be able to light up the Jungfrau using a variety of techniques until the evening of January 14.
The celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Jungfrau railway began with the lighting. On February 21, 1912, Italian miners blasted an opening through the Jungfraujoch using a large quantity of dynamite, finishing construction of a railway tunnel leading through the Eiger and Mönch mountains to the highest railway station in Europe.
The lighting project is the result of cooperation among Gerry Hofstetter, the Jungfrau railway and Bayer. Rainer Schorr, Bayer's Swiss spokesman, said: "We wish the Jungfrau railway well on its 100th anniversary. It is important to us that as many people as possible see the lighting spectacle. We are therefore pleased that many people in the Jungfrau region have already come to admire the lighting."
Interested media may visit Gerry Hofstetter at his camp at an altitude of 3,380 metres.
