Vienna (pts006/14.02.2007/08:00) - Liposuction is not ment to reduce body weight but local padding, resistent to diet. However, cosmetic surgeons have known for long, that Liposuction makes weight loss through dietary measures easier. Is it simply psychology or are there any biological reasons behind? "The loss of padding in certain areas can be very motivating", says DDr. Heinrich, Vienna based cosmetic surgeon and expert in body shaping, "It gives you the feeling of success. You got rid of fat in exactly those regions where you always wanted to loose it. But there's more to it. Fat is not simply filling material - it also produces hormones: Oestrogen. And oestrogen promotes weight gain in form of fat - which will produce more oestrogen, leading to even more weight gain. A vicious circle! If enough fat is removed by Liposuction also the oestrogen production will go back to normal.
Does this mean that Liposuction should always be performed before an attempt to loose weight through a change in diet? "Certainly not", says DDr. Heinrich, "that would mean overdoing it. In case of a minor weight problem diet and a change in lifestyle will do. If the problem is more serious, Liposuction might be helpful. But surgery should always be performed with syringes and microcannulas. In any case hormonal imbalance should be addressed if you want to loose weight and avoid the notorious yoyo-effect."
