EU-Standards for Media in South Eastern Europe
More than 60 Journalists attending Conference in Vienna

Vienna (pte020/05.05.2006/11:00) - Actual working conditions and challenges of journalists in South Eastern Europe (SEE) are the main topics of a three days' conference, held in Vienna by the South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO). Representatives of leading media will discuss about investigative journalism, the future of public broadcast, legal aspects of journalistic work and the position of minority media and diversity reporting between 5th and 7th of May. The main objective of the conference is to work out a catalogue of measures for improving the labour conditions of journalists and media representatives in the SEE-region. Designed resolutions will be presented to NGOs and European governments requesting them to support the concerns.

"It's still a long way for media in South East Europe, until they have reached Western European standards. Call for action exists especially for the legal environment of press activities, for the free access to information and the fight against corruption", states Mag. Oliver Vujovic, General Secretary of the SEEMO in an interview with pressetext.austria (pte). "Another important topic are difficulties of SEE-journalists entering the Schengen-area. Especially journalists during investigative activities - often under pressure of time - have problems to get visas for Schengen-countries quickly. We strive for better support from European countries in this issue."

The last day of the conference, Sunday, focuses on the newly founded European News Distribution Network (nedine), which aims to improve the exchange of news between Eastern and Western areas. Nedine is a federation of independent European News agencies that share the common goal to intensify the exchange of information and experience between media in the European Union and candidate countries.

The current conference is the last of sixteen events that have been arranged by the South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO) and the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), which was initiated by a department of the Austrian Foreign Ministry. SEEMO and ADA have been cooperating for the last four years, organizing several activities under the common header "Dialogue South Eastern Europe", wherefrom the actual is the first conference in Vienna. "Our convention enables us to call attention to problems - within the group of journalists as well as in public, by directly addressing the governments", explains Vujovic.
