London (pte053/20.07.2005/18:08) - The latest instalment in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is expected to break book-selling history, being the fastest selling book ever, and making its author JK Rowling £25 million (36m euros) richer after the first day's sales.
British bookstore Waterstone's is predicting that 10 million copies were sold worldwide during the first 24 hours of trade.
Publishers, book sellers and movie studios have made billions on Rowling and the previous five books.
WH Smith, also in Britain, reported that the book sold at 13 books per second in the first hour of sales in its 391 outlets, open at midnight BST on Saturday. This compares with eight books sold per second for the fifth Harry Potter book.
In the United States total sales came to 6.9 million copies, Barnes & Noble, the largest book seller, selling 1.3 million copies in the first 48 hours - 105 copies per second in the first hour.
Online customers ordered 1.5 millions copies through Amazon.com, the company reported.
