New York (pte035/13.07.2005/14:05) - In an era that is increasingly being defined as 'digital' or 'broadband', CBS News http://www.CBSNews.com has announced that it plans to create a 24-hour on-demand news service on the Internet, thus transforming the company into a 'multiplatform' operation.
"This represents a significant shift for CBS News," said CBS News president Andrew Heyward. "We are redefining the mission of CBS News and the people who work here to meet the demands of a 24-hour digital universe."
CBS' plans come as broadcast news networks lose ground to cable news operations, like CNN's and Fox News' 24-hour news channels. It is predicted that, by 2010, the number of high-speed or broadband connections in homes will either equal or surpass the number of those that currently have cable or satellite.
Larry Kramer, president of CBS Digital Media, said: "This major expansion of CBSNews.com is designed to capture an audience that is increasingly looking for news and information at all times of the day, not just during scheduled periods, and using the Internet for that purpose."
As part of the growing public interest to be involved in the news-making process, as with citizen journalism, or the recent 'new media' created from last week's London terrorist bombings, CBS will also introduce a blog called 'Public Eye', which will "greater openness and transparency into the news-gathering process". Additionally, 'The Eye Box', a video player featured on the CBSNews.com homepage, will make possible the viewing of about 25,000 clips and videos that haven't yet been seen on the television network, a statement from CBS said.
