Tokyo (pte037/12.07.2005/15:15) - In an effort to boost flagging revenue, Japan's largest TV network, Nippon Television Network http://www.ntv.co.jp/english/, will begin distributing TV programmes via the Internet.
The online service will be launched in October, and aims to attract 10,000 new members a year and sell 75 million euros worth of programmes within the next three.
The flat fee for the members-only site is 0.72 euros per programme and offers over 10,000 programmes covering the genres drama, entertainment and documentary.
Television broadcasters operating in the world's second largest advertising market suffered weak profits last year. This is partly due to Sky+-style digital video recorders, which allow viewers to skip commercials, thus affecting revenue in traditional TV advertising. Further declines are predicted in the coming year.
As broadcasters rely less on advertising revenue, NTV believes that the new online service will attract viewers in a new market.
