Beijing (pte012/29.06.2005/10:20) - Amidst an increasingly competitive cell phone market, a media group in China, Le-TV Media Group http://www.english.sina.com/technology/1/2005/0627/36319.html , has filmed a mini series that is only to be broadcast on mobile phones. The romantic drama called Appointment, is five episodes long, with each episode lasting only five minutes.
With very little dialogue in the soap, which is about two bikers' infatuation with one woman, the series lives more from close-ups of the characters who strike exaggerated poses which are more like 'cinematic haikus'.
"The gestures I make are very limited," Luo Ji, who plays one of the motorbike racers, said. "Your emotions should only come from facial expressions. It's quite difficult acting."
An innovative project, both technologically and commercially, the soap opera will only be available on the most sophisticated mobile phones - which cost about US $850. LG Electronics, the South Korean company whose top-range cell phones make viewing of Appointment possible, is one of the series' sponsors.
The Chinese telecommunications market caters to about 400 million people. Stiff competition and aggressive marketing make it necessary for providers to come up with new gimmicks to attract customers.
