London (pte026/15.06.2005/12:20) - Ebay http://www.ebay.com , the most popular online shopping domain, has agreed to withdraw all sales of Live 8 tickets from its website after being chastised by Live 8 concert organiser Bob Geldof.
Geldof said that eBay was "profiteering on the backs of the impoverished" by trying to cash in on the Hyde Park charity show, which is meant to ease poverty in Africa.
Over 2 million text messages were received in the last two weeks by Live 8 organisers for the concert ticket lottery. Hundreds of winners posted their tickets on eBay, with some receiving almost $1000 for a ticket.
EBay at first refused to retract ticket sales, saying that it would donate the money to the Live 8 charity effort. A spokeswoman said: "eBay believes it is a fundamental right for someone to be able to sell something that is theirs whether they paid for it or won it in a competition."
After receiving Geldof's angry criticism about the action eBay's MD Doug McCallum said: "The bottom line is that we've listened carefully to our customers over the last few days. Overwhelmingly the voice is that they would like us to take down the listing, so we are going to do our best to do that."
