Seoul (pte028/08.06.2005/11:35) - Hwang Woo-Suk of Seoul National University http://www.snu.ac.kr/ has spoken out against human cloning. The South Korean cloning pioneer, who in February year was the first scientist to clone human embryonic stem cells said: "Human cloning is not only ethically outrageous and medically dangerous, but technically impossible as well."
"Cloned human beings are merely a science fiction fantasy," he added. "I can assure you that on this globe, you'll never bump into a cloned human being at least within 100 years."
The scientist declines to comment on the religious and pro-life implications of cloning, and says that he is dedicated the 'pursuit of scientific research'.
"I believe I'm doing what I should do as a scientist," he said.
The South Korean government supports Hwang's research, and funding has been allocated to set up a global stem cell research centre in the country in conjunction with US and British participation.
"We hope to open this world stem cell research centre sometime this year," Hwang said. "This will serve as the heart of global efforts to develop replacement medicine for the 21st century."
