London (pte059/07.06.2005/18:02) - As part of sales and promotion of the G8 concert that will take place on 2nd July in London's Hyde Park, Bob Geldof, organiser and initiator of the project, was inundated with smses for free tickets.
London's Live 8 concert, which is part of a series being held in Paris, Berlin, Rome and Philadelphia, will feature Madonna, Robbie Williams and Sir Paul McCartney.
Those wanting a pair of the 150,000 tickets available must answer the following question correctly: The forthcoming G8 summit is being held near which city this July? A) Berlin, B) Moscow, C) Edinburgh.
The concert is Geldof's revival of the 1985 Live Aid concert, which raised £40 million for famine relief in Africa. The singer and self-appointed ambassador for peace intends to again raise awareness about poverty and environmental issues. The campaign, entitled Make Poverty History, is meant to encourage the world's wealthiest nations to offer more aid to Third World countries.
The UK government supports the Live 8 project. Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell said that it will 'set the scene' for the G8 summit.
Those performing in other cities around the globe include Will Smith, Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder and Maroon 5 in Philadelphia; Duran Duran in Rome, and A-ha in Berlin. Sir Elton John is 'extremely honoured"'to be taking part in the event. He said that it will feature 'la creme de la creme of musicians'.
The G8 summit http://www.g8.gov.uk/ will take place from 6 to 8 July at Gleneagles in Scotland.
