London (pte036/03.06.2005/13:53) - The BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk has been dealing with the consequences in recent weeks of director general Mark Thompson's plans to cut 4000 jobs. Strikes and union talks have hampered 'business as usual' at the usually smooth and productive BBC studios.
This week Thompson agreed to meet with unions, saying that talks would be 'useful' in negotiation processes.
Thompson hopes to save £355 million annually over a period of three years to revamp programming and technology. "We simply do not have any further movement to make on the offer we tabled at Acas (the government conciliation service) and to suggest otherwise would be disingenuous," Thompson said.
The offer includes the assurance that a review would take place in 2007, assessing whether staff could be redeployed. It would be withdrawn if management wasn't able to secure the 'cooperation' of the unions, Thompson cautioned.
