Seoul (pte035/31.05.2005/13:33) - A report delivered yesterday, Monday, by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) at the World Newspaper Congress stated that newspaper sales rose by more than two per cent last year. WAN http://www.wan-press.org reported that an estimated one billion people worldwide read newspapers that sold about 395 million copies daily.
Asia took the lead in the newspaper market, with China (93.5 million copies sold daily), India (78.8 million), and Japan (70.4 million) being the largest markets in the world. Sales rose by 4.1 per cent, and the top 100 best-selling papers are printed in Asia.
Timothy Balding, director general of WAN, which is based in Paris said, "It has been an extraordinarily positive 12 months for the global newspaper industry."
According to WAN global newspaper circulation grew by 2.1 per cent, daily titles sold were up two per cent, and advertising revenue also rose - by 5.3 per cent.
"Newspapers are clearly undergoing a renaissance through new products, new formats, new titles, new editorial approaches, better distribution and better marketing," said Balding.
In the west, behind China, India and Japan, the United States sold 48.3 million papers daily, and Germany, 22.1 million.
