Seoul (pte009/30.05.2005/09:12) - Southern Seoul is currently hosting the 58th World Newspaper Congress and the 12th World Editors Forum at the COEX Convention & Exhibition Center.
The congress, which welcomes about 1400 journalists from about 80 countries yearly, will be attended by first-class publishers, print media representatives, chief editors, managing directors, and CEOs such as Michael Golden, publisher of International Herald Tribune; Arthur O. Sulzberger, chairman of The New York Times Company; Per Mikael Jensen, vice president and editor-in-chief of Metro International; Michael Grabner, vice chairman of German Holzbrinck's; Shinichi Hakoshima, president of Asahi Shimbun, Japan.
"The Congress will focus on winning strategies for newspapers in today's media environment, featuring a wide variety of in-depth case studies and presentations from the most successful media companies and best-known media personalities worldwide," said Seok Hyun Hong, President of the World Association of Newspapers http://www.wan-press.org.
The main theme of this year's congress is 'Exploiting Innovation and Seizing Opportunities: The Keys to Success', which will include sessions on free newspapers and next-generation media. Also to be discussed are dailies and online or mobile news services.
Topics such as the popularity of tabloid newspapers and visual journalism will be presented at the World Editors Forum http://www.worldeditorsforum.org . According to Bertrand Pecquerie, director, of WEF, the forum will provide "a wide range of debates about editorial quality, newsroom management and online strategies".
The four-day meeting will also include the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the first print newspaper. A recent discovery found that the first newspaper was printed by German Johann Carolus in 1605, not in 1609, as previously thought.
The congress runs until 1st June.
