Liverpool (pte037/27.05.2005/17:53) - Liverpool's Champions League win on Wednesday night led to a euphoric welcome home by fans. Tabloid newspapers such as the Sun http://www.thesun.co.uk and the Daily Mirror http://www.mirror.co.uk sold out in Istanbul, where the final match was held, and in the soccer team's home town.
A spokesman from the Sun's sales department said: "We will be up week-on-week in Liverpool and we are selling extra copies in Istanbul where the Sun also prints."
Historic editions of both top-selling red-top newspapers sold like hot cakes.
Exact sales figures are not known but a Mirror spokesman said that the printing presses couldn't produce fast enough in Liverpool to keep up with demand. The special editions sold fast all day.
Both papers have been brimming with euphoria about Liverpool's sensational win, and Mirror sales are expected to continue, even perhaps exceeding the figure of 15,000 extra copies that were sold when Liverpool beat Chelsea to get to the final.
