Cannes (pte037/20.05.2005/14:30) - In a meeting in Cannes this week 25 culture ministers, film industry professionals, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) http://www.ispa.org.uk/ and telecoms agencies gathered to talk about using the Internet as a means of boosting European film industry sales.
Viviane Reding, an EU media commissioner, said, "In Europe, as on other continents, the opportunities for people to enjoy films online are set to increase tremendously over the next few years." Europe, she continued, had to "take the opportunity to contribute to exploiting new markets and increasing revenue for our film-makers while expanding the choice available to the general public."
It seems that online distribution is imminent, however things such as updating broadband connections is necessary, said UK Film Council spokeswoman Tina McFarlind. Internet piracy is also an issue that was discussed at the summit.
Internet distribution may help promote European film-industry films at a time where the global market remains dominated by Hollywood.
