Liposuction: Manual skills can't be replaced

Vienna (pts008/19.05.2005/09:20) - Besides the invention of tumescent anaesthesia, which allowed for surgical liposuction without general narcosis, it was mainly the development of the suction technique, that made Liposuction into "Liposculpture". It was the development away from the traditional vacuum machine technique for soft tissue removal towards less aggressive syringe systems that made the high quality of today's Liposculpturing possible.

"The use of syringes is the gentler method", says Viennese cosmetic surgeon DDr. Karl-Georg Heinrich. To him "using a syringe instead of a pump simply means less pain and less haematomas." See also http://www.ddrheinrich.com .

These advantages have a simple physical background. The syringe produces a weaker degressive vacuum, compared to conventional vacuum machine technique. Reduced dead space and the addition of fluid in the cannula, which provides hydrotomy reduces the suction-stress for the tissue thus minimizing the traumatic side-effects seen in liposuction while extracting fat with the same efficency as strong vacuum-machines. In other words: The syringe is simply better, in spite of its more challenging use. Performing liposuction with a syringe is hard work that requires skill and training. But at the end of the day the syringe technique will provide for better results. The light weight of the syringe allows for quick back and forth movements through the soft tissue with greater control and precision. Due to the absence of heavy vacuum tubing connected to the cannula, the physician operates more freely and with much less fatigue. The Syringe System allows for the precise measurement of the extracted fat.

All this translates into benefit for the patient. A less aggressive method of Liposuction means less destruction of tissue, less bleeding and swelling and less need for anaesthetics.

The syringe technique of Liposuction is ideally combined with the use of Microcannulas, which allow for the most gentle removal of unwanted fatty tissue. DDr. Heinrich has invented some microcannulas to meet his ideas on perfect Liposuction. The choice of the right cannula requires training, experience and a good overview over chances and challenges in Liposuction. It is of great importance for the success of surgery.
