Iraq overshadows election coverage in UK
After 2 years the ongoing war still dominates the media

London (pte024/06.05.2005/12:17) - The war in Iraq dominated news pages in the UK despite the final run of the election campaign, according to Factiva http://factiva.com , the news monitoring service owned by Dow Jones and Reuters. A survey of more than 700 national and regional newspapers was conducted.

Iraq was the subject of 908 newspaper articles and was the focus of 20 per cent of all election coverage ahead of education (18.1 per cent of the coverage and mentioned in 884 articles) and health, covered in 680 articles - 13.9 per cent.

With continued suicide bombings and terrorist attacks and no end to the war, countries such as Poland, Italy the Netherlands and Ukraine are pulling forces out of Iraq. The pull-out decisions are increasingly based on financial and security considerations.

Iraq continues to be the most hazardous place for journalists, with 19 dead and an additional 12 assistants losing their lives this year alone.
