Mountain View, California (pte030/04.05.2005/11:52) - Google.com http://www.google.com, the best known Internet search engine, has been accused of favouring liberals over conservatives after allegedly rejecting an advertisement from a conservative group. The ad is said to have had a similar text to the liberal one, which was previously accepted. Denying the charge, Google said that all its customers are treated equally.
Using Google's search engine facilities are free to both searchers and those linked to it. But advertising space can be purchased - 'sponsored links' - by website owners and promoters.
Google Inc.'s standing regarding political advertising is a neutral one according to Michael Mayzel, spokesman for Google, Inc.: "We welcome political ads and apply our policies equally, regardless of the views of the advertiser."
However Google has been accused of censoring conservative ads. William Greene, president of RightMarch.com, who says that although ads came up when he typed in 'Tom DeLay', "they were all anti-DeLay ads."
After deciding to buy some ads in support of DeLay, Greene noticed that all Google's ads for DeLay were negative and pro-democrat. "We took the liberal ad and changed the words to make it a conservative ad," says Greene. But Google refused to take the ad.
In 2003 Goggle was accused of accepting ads for pornographic websites, thus making access to underaged children possible, but didn't accept ads from licensed gun dealers selling products to adults. The policy was cited as "part of our terms and conditions," according to a Google spokesman.
