Reading (pte052/01.04.2005/16:30) - The market for telecoms equipment in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa) has grown in the previous year. As market researchers Canalys http://www.canalys.com report in a press release on their website, overall line shipments in the EMEA for the full year were up 7.1 per cent to 20.3 million. This has been the most positive year since 1999, when companies were investing heavily to achieve Y2K compliance.
In the final quarter of 2004, 5.4 million more shipments were sold than in the previous year, a rise of 5.7 per cent. IP-enabled lines increased as a proportion of all lines shipped in the quarter, to a new high of just over 13 per cent. The majority of these were hybrid rather than pure-IP systems.
French telecoms operator Alcatel finished the quarter as the market leader with a 17.8 per cent share, pushing German manufacturer Siemens into second place. While Alcatel's shipments grew year-on-year by 12.9 per cent to 967,680, Siemens' shipments fell by 3 per cent year-on-year and only took a 16.4 per cent share of the market. "Siemens continues to develop its indirect channels, recently announcing a distribution agreement with France telecom and this is likely to raise the vendor's profile in France in the coming quarters," said Matthew Ball, a research analyst at Canalys. Avaya, which completed its acquisition of Tenovis during the quarter, rose to third place with 505,170 shipments.
Geographically, the most dynamic regions continued to be Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East and Africa, where shipments for the year increased by 12.2 per cent and 27.7 per cent respectively. Shipments in Western Europe only increased by a mere 4 per cent. Despite recent hype surrounding new rich media conferencing and collaboration tools, the latest Canalys Converged Telephony Panel revealed that it is still the established voicemail, CTI and ACD applications that are best meeting or exceeding the channel's sales expectations. "It will take time for the channel to develop the skills and ROI proof arguments necessary to sell and install the newer applications," added Ball.
