London (pte025/14.02.2005/11:15) - Over a half of all single British women are happy to stay unattached, according to a new survey. As the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk reports, a poll by market research group Mintel http://www.mintel.com has found that 56 per cent of single women are "very happy" with their lives as they are and have no intention of getting married. According to the survey, 46 per cent of single men feel the same, although one in four miss the "comfort and closeness of a hug".
1,039 people between the ages of 25 and 70 who were neither married nor living with someone were interviewed by Mintel for the study. The poll also included those who were divorced or widowed. The research company found that one in four men aged 25 to 40 still lived with their parents, compared to 13 per cent of women. Almost 50 per cent of single men surveyed said that the biggest downside of living alone was "not having enough sex". The women's most common complaint was that people always assumed they wanted to be in a relationship. Although the survey was timed to coincide with Valentine's Day, it suggests that many single people will have little interest in the sentiment of the day.
39 per cent of men and 35 per cent of women said they considered themselves "apathetic about love. "Men are clearly going to have to work harder if they are looking for a partner in the future," said Jenny Catlin, a consumer analyst at Mintel. "With half of women being very wary or having no wish to find a partner and one in ten men saying they are too busy to find a partner, there is clearly scope for the dating industry," she added.
