Third W-CDMA contract for Siemens in Eastern Europe

Munich/Bucharest (pte037/07.02.2005/14:30) - German mobile phone manufacturer Siemens http://www.siemens.com is to supply equipment for building Romania's first W-CDMA network for the country's largest mobile network operator, Connex http://www.connex.ro . In a statement released on the Munich-based company's website, the Romanian mobile operator has contracted with Siemens to supply and install W-CDMA radio and core equipment, making Connex the first network operator in Romania to offer mobile broadband services. "Thanks to what is now our third W-CDMA contract from Eastern Europe, we will be able to further strengthen our market position in this region and our world market leadership," added Christoph Caselitz, president of the Mobile Networks Division at Siemens. "Following Poland and Slovenia, Romania will now be the third country in Eastern Europe to see a W-CDMA network go into commercial operation."

Connex is Romania's largest mobile network operator with over 4.9 million subscribers. Siemens operates in more than 160 countries in the world and in 2004, its 60,000 strong workforce posted sales of approximately 18 billion euros.
