London/Paris (pte025/01.02.2005/12:30) - BT http://www.bt.com has completed a deal worth 50 million euros with Paris-based defence electronics group Thales http://www.thalesgroup.com . As the Financial Times (FT) http://www.ft.com reports, the five-year deal involves the provision of all fixed voice and data networking services to Thales and its subsidiaries in 42 territories, including its domestic market.
The deal with Thales comes after the announcement last Wednesday that the French electronics group had won a contract believed to be worth 500 million pounds (721.5 million euros) with Bristol-Myers Squibb, the pharmaceutical group that has traditionally been a customer of AT&T. According to Francois Barrault, BT international's president, the deal confirmed the group's growing strength in international markets and in the outsourcing field in particular. "This contract is another demonstration of BT's position as a strategic partner for large international projects," he said.
As the FT reports, BT's agreement with Thales also illustrates the company's growing ability to win international contracts from under the nose of incumbents who might previously have regarded those deals as secure. Other similar recent deals include agreements with the Dutch police force, the Bavarian state government and the Ministry of Administration in Spain. According to Andy Green, BT global's chief executive, the group was prepared to spend "hundreds of millions" of dollars on acquisition if the right opportunities arose.
