Wolfsburg (pte039/31.01.2005/15:15) - Car manufacturing giant Volkswagen http://www.volkswagen.com will not sue the creators of a fake advert that showed a suicide bomber blowing himself up in a VW Polo, after it reached a legal settlement with the pair. As the Media Guardian http://www.mediaguardian.co.uk reports, Volkswagen has achieved its goal of distancing itself from the spoof advert, which was made by London-based advertising creatives Lee Ford and Dan Brooks for their showreel but was e-mailed around the world. Ford and Brooks have agreed to formally apologise for making the commercial, which they say was never supposed to be seen by the public.
"They have admitted that they created the commercial and that we had no input into it and that it was libellous and infringed our trademark," said a spokeswoman for Volkswagen. "We are not pursuing any damages," she added. According to a spokeswoman for David Price Solicitors, the law company retained by Ford and Brooks, a settlement had been agreed on Friday. "We are not in any position to comment any further about this," she said.
Last week, Volkswagen launched a legal action against Ford and Brook on the grounds that it was damaging its reputation around the world and falsely linking the company to terrorism (newsfox reports: http://www.newsfox.com/pte.mc?pte=050126020 ). The two creatives, who also have a website - http://www.leeanddan.com - are now hoping to put the whole saga behind them and continue to make legitimate adverts.
