Moscow (pte013/13.01.2005/10:15) - The number of new mobile phone users in Russia has doubled, according to a recent report. As the Russia Journal http://www.russiajournal.com reports, data presented in an analytical report by ACM-Consulting showed that the number of mobile subscribers in December 2004 was twice November's numbers, reaching 8.3 million people across Russia. At the end of last year, the total amount of mobile telecommunications subscribers was 73.9 million people.
Of the new subscribers, 43 per cent are from Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) http://www.mts.com . As a result of this, the consolidated subscriber base of MTS increased by 4.8 million people to 35.4 million people last month.
In the reported period, the share of VimpelCom http://www.vimpelcom.com in the number of new subscribers was 39.5 per cent. The Russian company's subscriber base increased by 3.49 million to 26.6 million people. Megafon http://www.megafon.ru had a share of 10.7 per cent in the number of new subscribers, while its subscriber base grew by 891,000 to 13.7 million people.
