Seoul (pte026/12.01.2005/12:15) - Korean electronic giant Samsung has developed the world's largest 5-inch plastic thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel for mobile and portable applications, the company has announced. As the Korea Times http://times.hankooki.com reports, the electronic manufacturer's 5-inch transmissive plastic colour LCD panel beats the 4-inch reflective plastic LCD panel previously developed by Sharp in both size and picture clarity, according to Samsung.
The 5-inch bendable LCD boasts a picture resolution of 100 pixels per inch, whereas Sharp's 4-inch model has only 80 pixels per inch. According to Samsung, it had attached transparent pliable plastic film it developed with the in-house developed low-temperature LCD production technology instead of a conventional rigid glass substrate to the TFT-LCD panel. The company said the high flexibility of the bendable plastic LCD panel will enable manufacturers to freely design shapes for LCD screens, promising virtually limitless potential applications for the panel. The plastic LCD panels will significantly broaden areas of LCD application, Samsung said.
"By developing the plastic LCD panel, Samsung Electronics has solidified its leadership position in the global TFT-LCD market and secured an edge in the next-generation display market segment," said Chung Kyu-ha, vice president of Samsung's LCD Research Centre.
