Portable USB hard drive for the TV
LaCie "silverscreen" saves up to 80 GB of multimedia

Paris (pte022/11.01.2005/12:30) - The French manufacturer of peripheral devices for PCS and Macintosh computers LaCie http://www.lacie.com has launched a portable USB hard drive, which can be plugged directly into multi-standard television sets. The new silverscreen hard drive comes in 40GB or 80GB capacities and is ideal for travellers, offering films, music and photos, the company say.

The silverscreen hard drive can store up to 14 MPEG-2 movies, 80 MPEG-4/DivX movies, 20,000 MP3s or one million photos, and weighs 300g. Furthermore, the LaCie silverscreen also includes a Video On-Demand (VOD) feature that allows people to conveniently rent or buy DivX VOD movies directly from the DivX website. The portable hard drive is pre-configured to recognise and instantly play back a wide range of movie file formats, such as the MPEG-2 ISO format and the popular compressed DivX format. First of all, files have to be uploaded from any PC or Mac through a USB interface. They are then available immediately to play on the LaCie silverscreen with surround sound. An optical digital output supports compressed signals such as Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS pass through. A remote control is also included for easy menu surfing and playback.

"As people's desire to carry and view media anywhere increases, LaCie makes it possible with this innovative storage solution," said Oliver Mirloup, LaCie Senior Product Manager. "With LaCie silverscreen, people can bring their movies, personal photos and favourite songs to their friends and family for instant playback on any TV without the need for a computer. The new portable hard drive is designed specifically for people who want to enjoy digital entertainment at home or on the road," he added. The 40 GB silverscreen is available immediately for 289 euros, while the 80 GB version will be available in February for 389 euros.
