Nokia to label new batteries in fight against counterfeits
Hologram labels to help determine originals

Helsinki (pte009/15.12.2004/10:25) - Finnish telecoms giant Nokia http://www.nokia.com has announced that it will introduce an authentication system by adding hologram labels to all of its new batteries. As the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) http://www.wsj.com reports today, Wednesday, the company has said the initiative is part of its fight against counterfeit batteries.

"With this new Nokia authentication program, we are directly attacking the counterfeiters who manufacture potentially unsafe batteries," said Razvan Olusu, vice president of Nokia's mobile enhancements and multimedia division. "The hologram label enables consumers to identify that the battery they are using is indeed an original Nokia battery."

As the WSJ reports, the hologram label on the new Nokia batteries consists of a holographic image and authentication code hidden under a scratch-off area on the label. Consumers are then able to inspect the holographic image for detailed information to check whether their battery is an original.

According to Nokia, the new labelling program affects all new batteries in phone sales packages, battery sales packages, and packages of mobile enhancements. The company has said that Nokia batteries bearing the hologram label have already been sold and will enter markets gradually. However, according to Nokia, original Nokia batteries without the new hologram labels are set to remain on the market for some time.
