Telenor launches 3G services
New network to cover 132 cities by 2005

Fornebu (pte021/02.12.2004/11:20) - Norwegian telecom company Telenor http://www.telenor.com has launched its UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system) mobile network for commercial use. The network will give access to third generation (3G) mobile services such as video calls and mobile TV. According to a statement by Telenor, the network currently covers more than two million people in 70 cities and densely populated areas in Norway. http://press.telenor.com/PR/200412/970856_5.html

"Norwegians are among the world leaders in adopting advanced mobile services, and the potential of such services has now been made significantly greater. At the time of launch, the new network covers approximately half of Norway's population, and we are committed to continue our network rollout as planned", said Jon Fredrik Baksaas, CEO of Telenor.

The new technology will give customers of Telenor Mobil transmissions of live images and faster Internet connection speeds than what customers have been accustomed to from existing mobile systems. Customers will also be able to make video calls free of charge during an introductory phase. They will also have the opportunity to use Mobile TV and other Internet access for less than 5 Norwegian Kroner (0.61 euros) per day.

According to Telenor, customers will need EDGE or UMTS handsets to access the new 3G service and users will need to be within an area that has 3G coverage. By March 2005, Telenor expects the network to cover 132 cities and densely populated areas, and by 2007 it will cover all areas with more than 200 people.
