Majority of UK Internet users have broadband
11.5 million people have high-speed Internet connection

Oxford (pte020/30.11.2004/10:45) - Over 50 per cent of UK Internet users now use broadband at home, according to the latest research. As the Media Guardian http://www.mediaguardian.co.uk reports, 11.5 million people that surf the Internet in the UK now have a broadband connection, a 117 per cent increase from the 5.3 million last year. According to the results published by Nielsen//Netratings http://www.nielsen-netratings.com , this means that more than half of the UK's online population of 22.8 million now have access to broadband Internet.

According to the Internet research and analysis provider, high-speed connections are most popular with households with five or more people - 60 per cent of them are broadband users. The research shows that the smaller households favour slower connection speeds of up to 56k.
Those with higher speed connections spend twice as long online each month as people with slower connections - over 32 hours. On average, they also view 1,444 pages per month - over three times more than low-speed Internet users.

"Twelve months ago, high-speed Internet users made up less than one quarter of the audience. Now they are more than 50 per cent and we expect this number to keep growing," said Gabrielle Prior, Nielsen's European Internet analyst. "As the number of high-speed surfers grows in the UK, websites will need to adapt, update and enhance their content to retain visitors and encourage new ones. In the future, websites will be "sped" out of the market, not "priced out".

The dramatic rise in the number of people subscribing to high-speed broadband services, allowing them to access video, music and games online is likely to provide broadcasters and record labels with a host of new opportunities. According to the figures, the number of people actively surfing the Internet from home each month in the UK has grown by 15 per cent to 23 million.
