Beijing (pte017/26.11.2004/11:30) - A Chinese-developed AIDS vaccine will soon be tested on humans. As China Daily http://www.chinadaily.com reports, the vaccine has received government backing to be tested on human beings. According to China's State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), the compound vaccine consists of DNA vaccine and regrouped virus carrier.
Chinese scientists had begun the research in 1996 by studying domestically popular virus genes, including the envelope albumen and core albumen of the virus. They found that if a human body is injected with DNA vaccine and regrouped virus carrier in succession, it could become immune to the AIDS virus. Tests on monkeys by researchers revealed there were no abnormal reactions when they injected the AIDS virus into the animal, if it had been injected with the compound vaccine beforehand.
According to an SFDA official, the "human body test", or stage I clinical test, will further access the security of the vaccine. Depending on the results of the stage I test, the government will then decide whether or not to launch stage II and stage III tests. Officials from the administration have promised to accelerate all approval processes of anti-AIDS drugs to help speed up relevant clinical researches.
AIDS vaccine is the only solution to stop the wildfire spread of the disease, experts say. Up to now, the most effective measure to deal with AIDS has been the "cocktail treatment", which stabilises or eases the AIDS symptoms, but does not kill the virus in the body.
