Vienna (pts001/01.09.2004/07:00) - KEYMILE AG, one of the world's leading suppliers of multi-service access solutions, has announced the launch of a VoIP media gateway for Next Generation Networks (NGN).
This solution enables network operators to introduce carrier-grade VoIP, without service interruption to their voice customers or changing the last mile infrastructure. This approach helps their future investments to be future-proof and guarantees a smooth migration to NGN.
The solution, which is an enhancement to KEYMILE's existing UMUX multi-service access platform, is available immediately. It complies to H.248/ MEGACO and SIGTRAN industry standards and therefore is interoperable with third party vendor softswitches.
KEYMILE expects its solution to appeal to both incumbent and alternative network operators, as well as owners of private networks.
A solution to the migration dilemma
Voice service continues to be a high and profitable revenue generating stream to most network operators. The KEYMILE VoIP media gateway addresses the dilemma that many network operators are facing: recognising the fact that voice delivered on packet-based NGN ultimately has many advantages - such as cost-effectiveness and rapid introduction of new services- but they also need to continue serving large numbers of existing TDM-based customers for a long time.
The principle behind the KEYMILE VoIP media gateway solution is simple. IP-based voice services are carried across the packet core network and when they reach the edge network, the KEYMILE media gateway takes over the service delivery to customers using the existing TDM-based voice technology. No change is perceived by customers, because they are able to continue using existing user terminals. This helps network operators to meet regulatory requirements while profiting from the deployment of NGN core network and service node infrastructures.
The KEYMILE solution is also able to support pure IP voice traffic delivered via next generation networks, thereby enabling operators to support legacy, new and future voice services from the same UMUX platform.
Differentiators & benefits
· Supports a highly variable number of subscribers in an access network -
KEYMILE media gateway Class 5 NGN provides network operators a strong business case even with a few hundred subscribers, allowing them to penetrate rural and greenfield areas with NGN.
· Easy migration path -
for existing users of the UMUX platform, adding the VoIP media gateway functionality simply involves the addition of a UMUX plug-in card in each street cabinet or exchange site. It guarantees a seamless migration from V5.x to NGN in network operators' access networks.
· Many revenue generating services within a small footprint -
the KEYMILE solution supports a wide range of technologies and service options all from one extremely compact, rugged unit that is designed to be installed within confined spaces or harsh environments, including street cabinets.
· KEYMILE's experience in carrier-class voice -
KEYMILE's heritage dates back over many years' experience providing carrier-class telephony services to some of the world's leading network operators. KEYMILE's solution also reflects its innovative capabilities in the area of broadband and Ethernet.
· Interoperability -
as is the case with all KEYMILE solutions, emphasis is placed on making sure that the VoIP media gateway is able to interoperate with other vendors' softswitches. This solution is fully compliant with ITU-T and IETF standards, namely
H.248/ MEGACO and SIGTRAN.
Technical details
The VoIP Media Gateway is a plug-in card, which is added to the UMUX platform. It is designed to work in both ATM and IP edge network environments and offers POTS and basic rate ISDN services via Ethernet, ATM or SDH backhaul interfaces.
About the UMUX platform
The compact UMUX multi-service access node is in operation within networks worldwide. It provides a range of network services all from a single box, covering copper and fibre, broadband and narrowband. The UMUX is completely 'future-proof', with a clearly mapped on-going evolution. New services or technologies can be supported simply by adding new plug-in cards.
