Bad Homburg/ Brilon (pte042/30.06.2003/16:25) - A recent study in Germany has revealed little real demand for so-called voice services.
Heitzig Consult http://www.heitzig-consult.de and Strateco http://www.strateco.de examined the use of voice services in an effort to determine how the market for language applications was progressing.
The study, which included a comprehensive survey of producers and dealers and several talks with experts, concluded that the expected boom has not taken place - even if the potential of voice services still exists.
"In recent years the market for voice services was driven by the potential for automation and rationalisation in client communication: lowering costs, increasing efficiency and optimising services were the main arguments.
"Among telecommunications and Internet providers we can see the turnover and customer bonding potential of so-called voice portals as an addition to existing services and a way to make use of the exiting network and re-market content," said Bernhard Steimel of Heitzig Consult.
At the same time the study observed that there is little willingness to invest in language technologies in Europe when compared to North America. Steimel believes this is because "decision makers in telecommunications firms still associate the topic of language with complex, user-unfriendly and cost-intensive systems".
Heitzig analysts however predict that new, open technologies such as VoiceXML and SALT could have a positive effect on the development of the voice services market in the future, as they provide an alternative to systems designed individually for firms.
