Hamburg (pte027/27.06.2003/17:28) - Digital video discs are rapidly replacing VHS cassettes on the German video market. A total of four out of five euros in video sales are earned through DVDs in the country, as reported by the German Audiovisual Media Association http://www.bvv-medien.de .
General video sales went up by 8.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2003, mainly due to the rise in DVD sales. In the first three months, DVD sales alone climbed 57 per cent to 11.6 million items, while traditional video sales dropped by 37 per cent to 5.1 million. Total video turnover was 248 million euros - about the same as in the same quarter last year. While DVD turnover grew from 149 to 194.2m euros, VHS turnover dropped to 54m euros.
The video rental market has also seen a clear substitution of formats. Three out of five rentals are DVDs. While stores only rented out 12.7 million VHS cassettes, 19.6 million DVDs were taken home by video store customers.
