Germany starts nationwide headache study
First epidemiological migraine study in the country

Munich/ Regensburg/ Muenster (pte022/27.06.2003/17:13) - The German Migraine and Headache Association (DMKG) http://www.dmkg.de is launching the first national scientific study on the frequency of migraines and headaches among adults and school children.

The study will examine the frequency of headaches in the German population, as well as the methods of therapy used and their impact on the national health system. In addition to how many Germans suffer from headaches, the project aims to find out whether they generally prefer to buy pharmaceutical headache remedies themselves or first go see a doctor. The study will also look at how headaches affect work and school performance, and try to determine how cost of treatment and inability to work affect the economy.

The DMKG is launching its study in Augsburg, Dortmund and Greifswald. A total of 7,500 randomly selected citizens will be questioned in personal interviews. In Greifswald an additional 1,000 school children in the eighth grade will be surveyed. Existing population studies will also be used to supplement the data collected. Preparations are already under way for the first survey in Dortmund, scheduled to take place in September.

The study will be financed through the DMKG and several pharmaceutical joint ventures. Leading the study are neurologists Volker Pfaffenrath and Arne May from Munich and Regensburg. Head epidemiologist is Klaus Berger of the University of Muenster.
