Framingham (pte029/26.06.2003/15:12) - The wireless Internet access boom has spread to the equipment market, say IDC market researchers http://www.idc.com .
In a study released today, Thursday, IDC analysts say they expect to see 13 per cent annual growth in this market for several years, with turnover reaching 1.1bn dollars by 2007. Sales are predicted to grow to 114 million WLAN chips within the same time period.
IDC analyst Ken Furer predicts the WLAN infrastructure will grow rapidly in the next few years, increasing the demand for the required semiconductors. He expects the boom to peak in 2005 and development to taper off afterward when the market for the most important applications becomes saturated.
Wireless connections for notebooks are expected to be the main source of turnover, while those for DVD players and game consoles will probably not have an influence on demand.
IDC further forecasts that the new, faster 802.11g WLAN standard will have an impact on the market this year. Officially introduced this month, the new standard has a theoretical transfer capacity of 54 Mbps (see newsfox: http://www.pressetext.com/pte.mc?pte=030613028&phrase=802.11g%20 ).
