Men still dominate web use in Europe
Women expected to catch up by 2010

New York (pte026/26.06.2003/14:31) - The number of European women who use the Internet is growing, but at a very slow rate, according to a study by Internet market researchers Nielsen//NetRatings http://www.nielsen-netratings.com .

In May 2003 about 35 million women in Europe, or 42 per cent, went online. This is only one per cent more than in the year before. Based on this relatively slow growth rate, researchers expect male and female Internet users to break even by the year 2010.

In the USA by contrast, about 51 per cent of Internet users are female. Nielsen Europe analyst Tom Ewing feels it is important for women to go online and fight against the common assumption that the Internet is male-dominated territory. While a change is taking place, he says, in some countries it is progressing at a very slow rate.

The proportion of male and female surfers varies according to European country. Sweden and Great Britain have the greatest percentage of female users at 45 per cent. Italy, on the other hand, is the only country where women make up less than 40 per cent of all Internet surfers.

The study further concluded that the websites that appeal most to women involve shopping, travel, education, health and beauty.
