San Francisco (pte037/25.06.2003/15:53) - A working group created by 17 leading producers of entertainment electronics, computers and mobile devices has set out to pave the way for the completely digital home, as announced in a release from Intel http://www.intel.com .
The so-called "Digital Home Working Group" (DHWG) http://www.dhwg.org intends to simplify the combined use of PCs, TVs and other mobile or electronic entertainment devices for digital content such as music, photos and videos.
Among the members of the group are Intel, Fujitsu, HP, IBM, Matsushita Electric (Panasonic), Microsoft, Nokia, Philips, Samsung and Sony.
The DHWG plans to set up a common platform based on open industry standards and work out guidelines for the development of digital devices that can share content with cabled and wireless networks in the home. These include PCs, TVs, printers, stereos, mobile phones, PDAs, DVD players among other products. The technical guidelines will be based on established standards such as IP and WiFi.
The ultimate goal of the working group is to create a digital household, where for example holiday snaps can be transferred from a digital camera to a PC in the study and then to a TV in the living room, or where music from the PC can be directed to the stereo system.
Many of these applications are possible in theory today, says Intel manager Andreas Dott, but practice leaves something to be desired.
