London (pte036/25.06.2003/15:40) - Japanese-Swedish company Sony Ericsson http://www.sonyericsson.com is pulling out of the North American mobile phone market and plans to concentrate more on Europe and Japan in order to save costs.
Sony Ericsson is therefore also shutting down its CDMA standard product line in the USA. It will, however, continue to produce CDMA phones for the Japanese market http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp?page=GIS .
In addition to withdrawing from the US, the mobile manufacturer plans to concentrate its European production in fewer locations. It will be shutting down both its Triangle Park research centre in North Carolina and its research and development division in Munich. 500 employees will lose their jobs.
According to Katsumi Ihara, president of the company, these measures "will secure further growth and the development of Sony Ericsson."
More than other mobile phone manufacturers Sony Ericsson is suffering from the crisis in the branch. The group's market share is currently less than five per cent worldwide.
