Biel (pte031/25.06.2003/15:22) - The Swiss Federal Council has given the SRG SSR idée suisse permission to introduce digital terrestrial TV in Switzerland, as reported today by the Swiss Federal Office for Communication (BAKOM) http://www.bakom.ch .
The decision creating the legal preconditions for the official introduction of digital video broadcasting - terrestrial (DVB-T) in Switzerland was based on a comprehensive test carried out in Engadin http://www.bakom.ch/de/medieninfo/medienmitteilungen/uvek/artikel/00996/index.html . The SRG may now create an initial network to broadcast four of its own programmes.
As requested during a hearing by the majority of cantons, the first digital networks will be set up in those regions which have little or no cable access. The first DVB-T network transmitter will begin operations this summer, and the country network should be fully set up by 2009. The Federal Council has turned down a proposal to temporarily increase fees to finance the transition.
In the future, private television production companies will also be able to broadcast programmes on the network, under the condition that they share the cost and maintain technical broadcasting quality.
Once the network is complete, residents of Switzerland will be able to receive up to 20 TV programmes. In addition to an antenna and television, they will need a so-called set-top box to receive the digital broadcasts. These cost between 150 and 250 Swiss francs.
