Egham (pte031/24.06.2003/15:52) - The number of wireless LAN hotspots will skyrocket this year, predicts a study by Gartner market researchers http://www.gartner.com .
The analysts estimate that the number will shoot up from 829 to 15,308 in 2003 and surpass 39,000 in 2005.
At the same time, Gartner research has warned that the market could become over-heated, and that the industry has placed too many expectations in Wi-Fi. After an initial phase of hype, it is likely that a phase of disillusionment will set in. The study cautions that hotspots need time to mature as an access platform and reach a certain "level of productivity".
Although the number of hotspots in the world will reach 71,000 this year, Gartner says this may not be enough to satisfy initial demand. According to the analysts, the number of users will grow to 9.3 million this year compared to 2.5 million last year.
However Gartner analysts say it will be hard to win over regular customers. Of the 2.5 million consumers registered last year, about 91 per cent were occasional clients.
