Atomic Energy Commission vs graffiti
French researchers develop protective coating for walls

Grenoble (pte029/24.06.2003/15:39) - French researchers from the Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) http://www.cea.fr have developed a removable plastic coating that can protect most surfaces against unwanted graffiti.

The product was originally developed as protection against radiation, according to the French embassy http://www.wissenschaft-frankreich.de .

The removable plastic film can be applied to a variety of surfaces, such as the surfaces of buildings, cars or traffic signs. The invisible polymer coating can be either painted or sprayed on and peeled off or removed with water.

At less than one euro per square metre the product is two to three times cheaper than protective techniques used up to now.

French researchers are still optimising the removal procedure for all surfaces. The layer shouldn't be too easy or hard to remove and should come off in one piece. While this is not a problem for smooth surfaces made of plastic or metal, it becomes difficult when the plastic is applied to rough surfaces such as plaster and cement.
