New York (pte034/23.06.2003/14:54) - The fifth volume of J.K. Rowling's best-selling Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", could go down in history as the book that sold the most copies.
US publishers Scholastic Inc http://www.scholastic.com estimate that five million copies of the children's book were sold on the day of the book's release, as reported by Wall Street Journal (WSJ). America's largest bookstore chain Barnes & Noble Inc http://www.barnesandnoble.com sold one million books within 48 hours and according to general manager Steve Riggio, these were sales figures the group had anticipated. Riggio called it the most successful sales day in the history of publishing.
Sales started Friday at midnight. Scholastic delivered the novel in a first instalment of 6.8 copies, with another 1.7 million to follow. Amazon.com Inc has already received a million orders for the book worldwide, making it Amazon's most successful sale. Bill Car, head of Amazon's US music, books, video and DVD section, has called Harry Potter V the biggest new-product-event in the history of e-commerce. Book dealers everywhere, whether online or offline, hope "Potter-mania" will help them out of the current slump in the business.
